'Garden Girls' Original Watercolour
At the age of 22 Gordon appointed an agent and went freelance, working for major magazines and advertisers. His first commissions were portraits and by the late 60s he had started to sell his originals though still working on his illustrations. Being married with three children also kept him busy! Over the next decade he stopped doing illustrations in order to concentrate on his paintings, which at that time were mainly in oils. Success came quite rapidly, showing at the R.A. Summer Shows and the R.I. exhibitions, painting mostly figurative subjects. Gordon’s paintings of girls in natural surroundings became his trademark and the success of the watercolours in the early 80s, prints with Solomon & Whitehead and Limited Editions by Michael Stewart Fine Art and then Paul Cooper Galleries gave his work a big boost. Later limited editions, published by Washington Green, are promoted and sold worldwide. Gordon has had many one-man shows, most recently at the prestigious Halcyon Gallery in Birmingham and London. He has been featured on radio and television in such programmes as the Gloria Hunniford Show and Collectors World. He has given seminars and after dinner speeches and has also done demonstrations of his figurative watercolour technique to Art Societies, painting from a live model. In the last few years he has supported various charities including projects for the Save the Children Fund and the Chiltern Cheshire Homes and has also been a regular ‘artist in residence’ on luxury leisure cruises. In 1995 his book “A Romance with Art” was published, with a forward by HRH The Princess Royal, featuring a wide range of his oils and watercolours. His originals are now very collectable worldwide and his shows are major attractions.
