Sue Howells

'Up The Revolution' Limited Edition Print

Sue was born in the Midlands in 1948 and although she is completely self trained as an artist she now paints full time professionally.

She works mainly in watercolours but is quite experimental and is always trying out new techniques. Sue has at first glance what appears to be a very casual style, but this has only been achieved through long hours of dedication, practice and experience.

She says ‘I paint solely in watercolours aiming to produce pictures which are both energetic and of a strong compositional value. By using a great economy of brush-stroke, I work as loosely as possible, letting the paint speak for itself as watercolours can be controlled but never bullied. Although based in the Midlands, I spend much of my time in Pembrokeshire recording the moody and winter atmosphere of its coastal towns.”

In 1994 she received the Windsor and Newton prize at the R.B.S.A. Open Watercolour Exhibition and this led to a commission in 1995 to supply 10 paintings, which were used in the BBC’s drama series ‘Dangerfield’. In 2000 her painting ‘Young Ash Trees’ was selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.

Sue’s work is now widely exhibited throughout the U.K. she has held several one woman shows in the last couple of years and her work is in private collections both at home and abroad.
